Conferences in India

From January 21 to 25, 2008, three different conferences and workshops were held in Mumbai, India. Here a short report.

On January 21st  ICOHs committee on “Occupational Health and Development” (SCOHDev) had a workshop concerning ”Basic Occupational Health Services (BOSH) – Current Status and future challenges”.  About 30 persons participated in the workshop.  It was based on a revised 3rd edition (September 2007) of a basic guideline published by ILO/WHO/ICOH, written by Jorma Rantanen.  Proceedings will be published.  SCOHDev also had a business meeting where the main issue dealt with the planning of committee activities in the next ICOH congress, in Cape Town March 2009.

On January 22nd  a workshop was held concerning “Basic Occupational Health Services in India”.  About 50 renowned occupational health professionals from India participated representing the various stakeholders from the government, industries and NGOs like the Indian Association of Occupational Health (IAOH) and Confederation of Indian Industries.  A recommendatory document was discussed and will be presented to the Indian government.

On January 23-25 IAOH organised its 59th National Conference with about 400 participants.  The main theme was “Basic Occupational Health Services in Emerging Economies: Challenges and Opportunities”.  The conference was very well organised and combined the scientific contents with practical applications and management policies.  Besides the Indian participants there was also an international input, by delegates from Australia, Britain, Colombia, Finland,  Japan, Kenya, México, USA and the reporter from Sweden.
